Let There be Peace on Earth
(A Christmas reflection for all seasons)

One song, although written over half a century ago, still has a message for today. The lyrics of “Let There be Peace on Earth”, written in the mid-1950s by a young American couple, Gill Jackson Miller and Sy Miller, have inspired millions. It has appealed to people of all nations, backgrounds and beliefs, and been recognised around the world as an anthem for peace.  

At this time of year, people tend to show more love, kindness and goodwill to each other. Even armed forces have often ceased hostilities during Christmas day. The song below echoes the angel message when Jesus Christ was born: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” (Luke 2:14) 

Seeing ourselves as united with God and others of the human family, each of us can make an effort to show kindness to others, not retaliate, avoid escalating arguments, forgive, and sow love, hope, faith, and joy – in short, be an instrument of peace. (See the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi.) We can each make a difference and have a part in creating a better world. 

Let there be peace on earth 

And let it begin with me. 

Let there be peace on earth 

The peace that was meant to be. 

With God as our father 

Brothers all are we. 

Let me walk with my brother 

In perfect harmony. 

Let peace begin with me 

Let this be the moment now. 

With every step I take 

Let this be my solemn vow. 

To take each moment 

And live each moment 

With peace eternally. 

Let there be peace on earth, 

And let it begin with me.
